Though it may not seem like it, there are actually an enormous amount of variables involved in determining the cost of a unit. The finish, faceplate choice, backing panel size, fireback choice, logset choice, venting requirements, labor costs, presence of optional fans, remotes, etc., framing, and a hearth pad are only very few factors that determine how much will be spent. For this reason it is virtually impossible to place an exact cost on each unit. Items with definitive prices that aren’t determined by other factors, such as pizza ovens, grills, and furniture sets, are labeled with prices.

It is commonly stated that ventless=heat and vented=heat loss and just ambiance, but this is actually far from the case. In the hearth industry, technology has actually come a very long way since the days of open brick fireplaces. Our vented zero clearance fireplaces, fireplace inserts, and freestanding stoves are actually up to 89% efficient – almost all of the heat produced by these furnace-rated units is sent into your home as heat. Even our vented log sets for open fireplaces, which are not furnace-rated appliances, will send a small amount of heat into your home due to their high-quality materials and craftsmanship. On the other hand, many people assume that ventless units send 100% of their heat into your home due to the lack of a vent; however, because it is required to keep the windows open while burning them, there actually is heat loss occurring. If you’re building a hearth from scratch in a space that’s never had one before, you’re looking for a fireplace (AKA zero clearance fireplace). Fireplaces are typically installed during new construction or as part of a remodel project. As opposed to an insert, the housing (or firebox) of a fireplace is composed of an inner and outer metal shell. The term “zero clearance” refers to the fact that the framing (studs and subfloor) can come directly in contact with the firebox; no clearance is required, allowing lots of installation flexibility.

If you’re looking to modify an existing fireplace to improve its efficiency and/or appearance, you’re looking for an insert. An insert is specifically designed to fit into an existing metal or masonry fireplace. Before your visit to Dean’s, it is a good idea to take the measurements of your current fireplace so we can help you determine the perfect insert. You can print our Measurement Guide here!

Our wood and even gas units will function during a power outage! Our wood units require no electrical connection to run at all. The only element that will not function during a power outage is the blower, which is often an optional accessory. As for gas, units with millivolt ignition also require no electricity at all. However, even our units with electronic ignition feature a battery backup that will ensure you can use the unit in the event of a power outage. Like wood, the blower does not work without an electrical hookup. The only fuel source that will not function during a power outage is pellet. This is because a pellet unit works purely through its moving parts and motorized air flow; without electricity these functions cannot take place.

A gas log set is a kit that consists only of a burner, logs, and any included accessories that are assembled into an existing fireplace. Because the appearance of the opening is unchanged, a gas log set allows you to keep the fireplace’s viewing area intact. However, they are not designed to heat a home like an insert. A gas log set is for a homeowner who would like to improve the interior appearance of their current fireplace and increase convenience, but is not concerned with heating or efficiency.

There also exist unvented log sets that are designed to be burned with the damper closed, but there is misinformation about their usage. CLICK HERE to learn more!
